When people hear “pelvic floor therapy,” they often think of postpartum care or doing Kegels—and...
Your First Pelvic PT Visit at Steady State: What to Expect
If you’ve never done pelvic floor physical therapy before, it can feel a little intimidating. That’s completely normal. At Steady State, our job is to make the process feel comfortable, empowering, and personalized from day one.
Whether you're dealing with leaking, pelvic pressure, pain, or just a sense that something isn’t quite right during running, lifting, or daily life—we're here to help you reconnect with your body and move with confidence.
What Happens at Your First Session?
1. We Start with Your Story
This isn’t just a checklist of symptoms. We’ll ask about your movement history, goals, training, past injuries, stress, sleep, and anything else that might be impacting your health. Your story guides your care.
2. Comprehensive Movement & Pelvic Assessment
We look at the whole system—not just the pelvic floor in isolation.
- Core and breathing mechanics
- Pelvic alignment and pressure strategies
- Hip, spine, and rib mobility
- Coordination and strength during functional movements
If appropriate (and only with your consent), we may also recommend an internal pelvic floor exam to assess muscle tone, activation, and endurance. But this is never required.
3. Collaborative Goal Setting
We'll talk through what you want to accomplish—whether that's running without leaking, lifting heavier, preparing for birth, or feeling more connected to your body. Together, we’ll create a plan that supports your life and goals.
4. Education + Action
You’ll leave your first session with a deeper understanding of what’s going on and why. We’ll often start gentle movement or breathwork strategies on day one so you can begin to feel change right away.
What Makes Steady State Different?
Our blended orthopedic + pelvic approach means we:
- Look at the entire body and how systems interact
- Understand how training load, stress, and movement patterns affect symptoms
- Support your return to impact activity—not just symptom relief
- Speak your language—our pelvic specialists are also runners and strength athletes
We don’t believe in cookie-cutter treatment plans or just handing you Kegels. We believe in building strength, control, and confidence.
What to Bring (and Wear)
- Comfortable clothing you can move in (e.g. leggings/shorts)
- Any specific questions or concerns
- An open mind—we’re here to support you
